Project Upcycle for Heart and Stroke 2010

Many of my readers know that I was born with a heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot. When I was 3 years old, I had open heart surgery and went into complete heart block. I need a pacemaker now to keep my heart beating. Thanks to the support of my parents, family and friends and the work of the wonderful doctors in Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg, I am happy and healthy today at 33. And yes, I have 2 children!

I have no doubt in my mind that the research and advocacy of the Canadian Heart and Stoke Foundation has played a big role in the betterment of my life and the lives of others like me.

So now it's time to use my talents to give back. I have come up with Project Upcycle for Heart and Stroke to coincide with Heart Month here in Canada.

- for each day in February (or as many as I can possibly handle) I will take something and "upcycle" it into something else. Afterall, I am sort of upcylced myself aren't I? Made of a few spare parts here and there. Many of my fellow heart patients understand what I'm talking about. Many have pacemakers, shunts, new valves, even whole new hearts!
- I will put my new creation up for sale in my Etsy shop (Tawny Bee)
- Half the proceeds (minus shipping) of each product will be donated to the Heart and Stoke Foundation
- I will post a play by play of my creations on this blog and my Facebook Fanpage, so check back often!

So you might see a pair of pants turned into a lovely skirt. You might see a t-shirt turned into baby clothes. Who knows? The possibilities are endless since I'm putting my - pardon the pun - heart into it!

How do participate you might ask?

- you can purchase one of my creations and have half the proceeds donated to Heart and Stoke research
- you can post this blog post or any others onto your blog, Facebook, Twitter etc.
- You can take the little icon I've made at the top of this page and post it wherever you like to get more people involved.
- You can direct others to purchase items
- You can try out this challenge for yourself. Make 1 or 28 upcycled projects, post them for sale and donate some proceeds to Heart and Stroke
- Go directly to the donate page of the Heart and Stroke Foundation and make a donation

If you do any of the above, I would love for you to post in the comments to let me know! I need all the encouragement I can get. This is a huge untertaking for me.

And of course, here are some links that may be useful as we get going:

To start things off for tomorrow February 1st I will be making something out of these materials:

A bunch of old baby socks, some Gladware lids, a baby bottle top, some old pacifiers that the kids have grown out of, some ribbon I got from a Christmas present... What could I possibly make out of all of this? Stay tuned tomorrow to find out....

Kevin Bacon's Got My Boy!

I am marrying into a pretty great family. Or so I've decided this week. Terry, as you know, had to go to Ottawa at the beginning of the week for work. And this is when Winnipeg decided to throw a huge blizzard at us.

On Monday morning when I woke up, I could barely see across the street. By mid-morning I surveyed the driveway. There was a huge snowdrift the height of Logan behind the car! I decided to brave the wind and go outside for a minute to check it out. I had promised Logan that we could order pizza as a special treat while daddy was gone, so I had to see if I could clear a path for the delivery driver.

Well after I pushed with all my might to get the door open, and spent 20 minutes shoveling out our front step, I realized I was going to need help. My pacemaker can't take that kind of pressure! With Terry gone, I was thinking that I could venture next door and ask our neighbor for help when he got home. But he gets home late, and we needed pizza!

So I called on my future brother in law Cory. He told me that he would be over after work to help dig us out. And that's just what he did! He drove here on the icy roads right after he got off of work to help us out. Fortunately for him, the other neighbors were busy playing with their new snow-blowers and had decided to plow everyone's driveway.

But not to worry, I still made Uncle Cory work for his share of pizza. He had to watch a rambunctious toddler who idolizes his Uncle Cory while I had a shower. With Terry gone, I had no way of keeping tabs on Logan while I showered and knew he would be into everything if I left him alone for that long.

It really is great to finally have some family in town!

Thank you uncle Cory!

Ack! Kevin Bacon has got my boy!

Won't Be Long Now

... Until she's crawling around here and tearing up the place.

Better get to baby proofing!

How long do you think it'll be before she's more mobile? I'm guessing a week, maybe two?

Mommy, Why Don't You Grow A Beard?

Terry has gone to Ottawa for a few days, which means that Laney was much surprised this morning when mommy walked into her room to feed her a morning bottle. At first she didn't really notice. I was wearing daddy's house robe and she was still half asleep and chewing on her fists. But once I had changed her and sat down to stick a bottle in her mouth, she knew something wasn't quite right.

She reached her tiny baby hand up and landed it's sticky little grip on my chin. Wha?!!! There was no soft, cuddly fuzz there to grab and pull. Hmmm, maybe she just needed to move her head up there and check it out. Nope, nothing there! Harumph!

Oh, she drank her bottle well enough, but when it came time to settle down and go back to sleep, it just wasn't happening. Where was that soft, fussy face to cuddle with?

Bearded One, please come home soon. Your little girl misses you!

Nutty for Butternut Squash

Leftover Mozza chicken for lunch is super nummy. Especially when you get to eat it downstairs in the rec room!
And baby cookies are pretty delicious too!

But nothing beats the Butternut Squash that we fed to Laney last night! Boy oh boy! She couldn't get enough of that stuff. Terry had to shovel it in as fast as he could. Didn't expect to have a good reaction, so I didn't bother with the camera. By the time we figured out she liked it, it was too late to snap a picture. She would have bitten our arms off if we got in the way of her precious Butternut Squash!

After dinner, she spend a half hour chewing on the bib and cloth trying to extract every last drop of sweet sweet squash from it. What a nut!

Team LT's Pick For Best Movie of 2009

And the winner is .....

OK, so we don't get out that much to see movies and we have children. Also, we needed to decide as a team and this is the only movie that we all could agree on. Plus, IT'S AWESOME!!!!

Top Ten Reasons Why Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs is the best movie of 2009:

10) The main characters are a guy with crazy hair and a huge nose and a girl who is a "nerd" because she has square glasses and wears a scrunchie.

9) Chicken Brent!

8) Dude! It's raining hamburgers... come on!

7 ) The Porta-Potty ride to Flint's secret lab and the cool food voice: "Cheeeeezeburger"

6) Spray on Shoes! They never come off. It solves the untied laces epidemic.

** side note: It also solves the problem many women have deciding which shoes to wear everyday.
5 )Flint trying to teach his dad how to e-mail while navigating his way through a giant vat of french fry oil

4) Rat Birds!

3) Bruce Campbell, Mr. T and Doogie Howser all in one movie... come on again!

2) The Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator or FLDSMDFR for short (Pronounced: "FLuh-Duh-Suh-Muh-Duh-FRer")

side note: This is now my desktop picture. Super nerdy!

1) Steve - the talking (errr... I mean... thought translated) gummy bear obsessed monkey

So if anyone absolutely needs to give us things for free - we would really love to have a real copy of the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs DVD *hint hint* or possibly any of the other merchandising they have. If we get multiple copies, we'll be sure to give the extras away on this blog.

Playing with toddlers is so much fun sometimes. Logan has the most interesting imagination.

Here is the parking garage. As you can see, Homer is in charge.

Toad is the resident garbage man. He drives his sanitation truck over to the mountain of garbage for a routine stop.

Then we check out a little dinosaur freestylin'. He poppa-wheelied all the way up to the top of this Coke bottle. Oh no! How will he ever get down? Logan brings his trusty ladder on over for help. Smart idea!

Then B.O.B. the Blob decides it's time for lunch. He stops at his favourite restaurant for some pizza.

Watch out! Laney Destructo will grab and devour anything within reach! The parking garage is no match for this mammoth destroyer!

And in the background is where he's supposed to store all his toys when he's done. Does he? No! He leaves them for his parents to clean up after he falls asleep at night. And in the morning, his toyland adventures start anew!

Snow Angels

On Friday afternoon I had a pacemaker appointment, so Terry took a few hours off of work to watch the kids while I went. We figured that was better than me taking the kids to the hospital and risk them catching something, or fussing and breaking stuff while I'm hooked up.

It was a beautiful day in Winnipeg. 3 degrees C. So while I waited in a boring chair for my appointment, Terry took the kids outside to play. Logan hasn't been tobogganing yet this season. Here he is all ready to go.

We always tease Logan and say: "If Laney doesn't start behaving, we're going to throw her in a snowbank!"

To which he replies: "NOOOOOOO! I love her!"

We always assure him that we love the baby too. But Terry couldn't resist throwing her in the snowbank and taking this picture.

Logan had tons of winter fun. He ran upstairs when I came home to tell me all about it. How they went sledding and put Laney in a snowbank. hehe

Sounds like waaay more fun than I had.

This is the picture where is looks like Laney is saying "FU daddy for putting me in this crazy pink suit and putting me in this crazy blue sled and taking a bunch of crazy pictures." hahaha

In case you were wondering, my appointment went fine. Pacer is fine, blood pressure is great. They said I look pretty darn good for a heart patient with 2 young kids.

Team Conan 2010

I'm late getting the blog out this morning because I actually slept in! But now my back hurts from sleeping too long, so I'm paying for my extra rest :(

Anyway, I don't know about you guys, but we've had much entertainment the last few days watching the LateNight fallout. We love Conan! He's awesome and funny and smart. Even though we're almost always in bed before his show even starts, we would be very sad if he were no longer on TV doing his thing.

So when I came across this tutorial to make a t-shirt to show our support of the red headed funny man, how could I resist? I made one for Terry! Check it out!

And here's a quick reminder, just in case you are like me and don't read any of the stuff along the side of blog postings, or read from an RSS feed: if you want to keep updated on all my sewing and crafty projects, you are welcome to become a fan of Tawny on Facebook. This t-shirt is the latest posting on there along with all sorts of other goodies I'm working on.

Sweet Potatoes For Our Sweet Potato

Last week we had had enough of Lane being fussy after dinner. Cereal was just not cutting it anymore. So we started her on some "real food." It's recommended that you start with the sweeter vegetables first. With Logan we started with carrots, but there weren't any at the store when we went on Saturday, so sweet potatoes it was!

Here is her reaction:

Yup, pretty darn blase.

Anyway, she ate the sweet potatoes for the recommended couple of days to test for bad reactions and allergies. Everything was A-OK. We then moved onto carrots. That caused a couple of nasty faces the first time Laney tried them. We thought that capturing a video the next night would make up for the boring first real food adventure video. But when I hit record, she just started eating the carrots without complaint or faces, which is what we wanted her to do, but makes for another boring video that I won't subject my readers to.

Maybe there will be a funny face or two when we try bananas? If you remember, Logan hated them when he was a baby.

Don't let this sweet little angel fool you...

She's nothing but trouble...

She even has a sign that says so...

But watch out! ...

She eats trouble for breakfast!

Don't you love how all the pictures came out in different directions? Terry took the pictures while I was napping upstairs. That man needs to learn how to hold a camera! I guess I could have gone in a fixed the direction of the photos, but I'm lazy and it's early...

A Distraction

In the evening I sometimes need a break from little children. Who would have guessed?

While, I'm sewing, or vegging on the couch, Terry watches the munchkins. And usually that means putting time in at Logan's favourite place - his office (the spare room).

Last night, I was busy sewing, when I received an email. My sewing machine is right next to the computer, so I checked it out. It was from "the office". I clicked on it and this is what I got:

Anything to distract children and have fun with the iPhone at the same time. Sheesh...

Team LT's New Years Resolutions

This year Team LT has a few New Year's Resolutions. If I remember, I will report back periodically to let you know how we're doing.

Logan: Figure out this potty training thing once and for all. I admit that it's mostly Logan's parents that are slacking in this area. Logan is willing and able to potty train (With the "willing" getting smaller and smaller the more we slack off). But we will find some energy and get going this year. Logan is starting pre-school in the fall and we need to have this somewhat accomplished by September.

Lane: She has tons of things to work on. Getting teeth, crawling, walking, talking, eating real food. Pretty much everything in the world is what Laney wants to accomplish this year. I have a feeling she'll get pretty far.

Terry: Terry and Tawny both need to work harder on not ignoring Logan so much. Lane is so much of a handful lately that we are taking our well behaved, smart, little toddler for granted. Logan is able to entertain himself when we're having trouble with Laney and he also listens relatively well and plays by himself while we're feeding, changing, coddling, de-fussifying the baby. But this is unacceptable! We need to spend more of our energy on spending time with our smart, creative little boy. We only have this time with him once. We can't screw it up! Doesn't this sweetie need all we have to offer?

Tawny: I have a one business goal this year. I want to open my second Etsy shop displaying more adult fare (clothing, lingerie). I have also taken the handmade challenge this year.

Pledge Handmade

I will also take this a step further by making the resolution not to buy any clothes for myself that aren't either handmade or reconstructed by myself, handmade by someone else, or bought at a second hand store. This should be a bit of a challenge considering that I don't normally make things like jeans and outdoor gear. But I'll figure it out, or go without!

Wish us luck!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Years from the LT Experience!

May all your wishes and dreams come true in 2010.

A quote from Terry's Facebook: "Nooooo Y2k was wrong! It was Y2010 & now Tawny's apple is craving precious brains! My iphone is trying to make long distance calls without the right plan! Oh the hu-manity!"

And my response: "Ack! My pacemaker is set to hummingbird! Whhhiiiirrrreeee"
