For a couple of weeks now, Laney has been a drooly, cranky, disaster of a baby every evening. Actually it has been more like every afternoon and evening. The child won't nap during the day. We count it as a good day if she takes 2 ten minute naps. It's been very hard on me, to the point where I had to cancel the craft show I was going to do today because I couldn't handle the extra stress.
So, we thought we'd get started on the cereal before she's officially 4 months. She showed all the signs of being ready. She can sit up, she gums everything in sight, especially when she's watching us eat or we're preparing food. She seems cranky, and still hungry after every feeding, although she won't take any more milk.
We bought some rice cereal and tried it out. I made the amount they said to on the box. Five tablespoons of cereal with 2/3 cup milk. Laney took to it right away. Terry assumed, as did I, that she would take forever to eat her first bowl of cereal. Or at least she'd leave a lot behind. We thought it would be safe to eat our meal at the same time. This was a mistake! If Terry stopped even for a second to take a bite of his meal, we'd hear a loud squeal from Laney.
She was hungry! And there was going to be no stopping her!
She ate almost the entire bowl of cereal and then downed almost an entire bottle of milk. We're hoping this might calm her down a bit. After her dinner she seemed less agitated. She drooled less and wasn't as fussy. But maybe that was just the novelty of eating for the first time.
The books we've consulted on the matter have all said to take it slow. Introduce one feeding a day for awhile and then move up to two. Laney has other plans though. At breakfast this morning, I heard her gumming her high chair and squealing her opposition to the fact that her big brother was eating and she wasn't. We might be moving up to cereal at every meal, just so that we can get some peace.
I'll keep you updated.
